New Website Under Construction.jpg

I create art from objects I find on the ground, at yard sales, in thrift store and at flea markets.  I incorporate  these recognizable and not so recognizable objects into my assemblages, sculptures and mixed media work.  Byy doing so,  I build unexpected juxtapositions between the objects and other materials to see how their new relationships change the way we see them. Often, I add painted passages as counterpoints to the three-dimensional forms.

Precedents for my practice are found in the work of American Surrealist Joseph Cornell and German-born feminist sculptor Eva Hesse. Both of these 20th century masters deployed unconventional materials to "talk about" their lived experiences. I allow my artworks to similarly "talk about" my conflicts, confusions, and insights. Assembling and rearranging objects allows me to "re-construct" and redeem my personal narrative.

In all my work, I honor the material culture of the past and how it lives through us.

Kate Carvellas was born in Baton Rouge, LA, and attended George Mason University, where she received a BFA in Theater. She moved to Los Angeles in 1992 to work in the entertainment industry (Disney, etc.). Creating art had always been an important part of her life.  However, it wasn't until 2008 that she made art her central pursuit.  At first, she focused on collage, creating thematic compositions from mass media imagery. By 2007, she had transformed her practice to focus on three-dimensional objects she collected from thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets.  Using everything from everyday objects to rusty, old and often unidentifiable ones, she incorporates them in her work; juxtaposing these disparate items and giving them new life and new meaning.

Carvellas began exhibiting in 2008 and has expanded her practice since, with numerous solo exhibitions, even more group shows and a major installation in 2018. That same year, she won first place and the purchase prize at the Museum of Art and History, Lancaster. Her paintings and sculptures are in private collections throughout the US, from Florida and Virginia to California. Her work has been reviewed in the Pasadena Star News, Art and Cake and Diversion LA.

Through her assemblage, sculpture and mixed media art, Kate Carvellas brings aged, often distressed materials into our contemporary world, challenging us to see them anew.
